President's Message

Hello, everyone! I hope the fall is treating you well.

Last month, ACI CNY organized an amazing and informative tour of the Lehigh Cement Plant in Glens Falls, NY. Lehigh is a state of the art cement manufacturing plant, with the most up-to-date operating system and impressive Green Power efficiency. We toured through the entire facility, from the control room to the kiln, climbing to the top to look out over the Hudson River and all the way to the mountains of Vermont (see photos below).

It was a good weather day, and our lunch was fantastic at Davidson’s of Glens Falls. In the end, we had a great turnout from the Eastern ACI Chapter, as well as a group from the NYS DOT. A very special thank you to Tom Quinlan of Lehigh for making it all possible!

Now on to our November presentation! ACI CNY Vice President John Pillar and Cara Celorio (both from Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis) will present an informative session on anchoring to concrete on Wednesday, 11/18. The session is worth 1.0 PIE credit. Check out the full description below, and be sure to register right away. It's hard to believe, but this will be our last presentation for 2015. I hope you can make it!

Program description:

Join us for November’s presentation - Anchoring to Concrete: ACI 318-14 Design Considerations and Strength Examples of Cast-In and Post-Installed Anchors. This one hour seminar will discuss where anchor design criteria can be found in current and past editions of the ACI code. It will include several design examples of cast-in and post-installed anchors as well as an apples to apples strength comparison of several different manufacturers’ post-installed anchor products.

Contractors – ever wonder why the engineer of record throws a fit when an embedded anchor is missed in a pour? Come find out why some anchor substitutions are just not the same, and what the real difference in strength is for cast-in versus post-installed anchors.

Architects – ever wonder why the engineer of record has rejected a proposed post-installed anchorage of a hand rail or fence post because the anchor was too close to the edge of concrete? Come learn about minimum edge distance requirements of post-installed anchors to help mitigate the risk of a concrete splitting failure.

Engineers – want to brush up on the latest requirements of ACI 318-14? Come learn about major changes to the ACI code for post-installed anchors installed in an upward or inclined position, or anchors subject to sustained tension loading.

We hope to see you all there!

Presented by:

John Pillar received his bachelor's and master's degrees in architectural engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 2007. He spent four years as a design engineer in Baltimore before joining Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis in July of 2012. John holds professional licenses in Virginia, New York, and Illinois and is currently Vice President of the ACI CNY Chapter.

Cara Celorio received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester and her master’s degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis from Syracuse University. She has been a full time design engineer for Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis since May 2014.
