President's Message

We started 2014 off the right way. Penn State professor, Dr. Thomas E. Boothby, P.E., Ph.D., R.A., drove all the way up from State College, PA to give us a terrific presentation, titled “A Historical Perspective on Structural Design.” It was a great, in depth, look at designing structures from “the way we always have” back to Roman times to modern, empirical design processes. It’s an honor for ACI CNY to have a speaker like Professor Boothby come and talk to us.

For February, we will have a more familiar face before us as Nick Carparelli, Executive Director of the NY Concrete Masonry Association, will be discussing “Effective Building Designs with Concrete Masonry – Introducing the Next Generation of CMU.” This talk will also explain the recent changes to ASTM C-90 and discuss how those changes impact construction with concrete masonry units. If you have attended a presentation by Nick, you know that his talks are very informative and entertaining with plenty of examples presented.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Double Tree in just a couple short weeks!

Program description:

A new generation of Concrete Masonry Units which promises to have a significant positive impact on future load bearing masonry construction is on the horizon. Thanks to recent changes that have taken place in ASTM C-90, the Standard Specification for Load Bearing Concrete Masonry Units, several new, innovative and more efficient configurations of CMU are now C-90 compliant. A second major change has occurred with the updating of the unit/mortar/assembly correlations in Unit Strength Table of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee Specification, the codified method of correlating unit compressive strength, mortar type, and assembly compressive strength. This change has resulted in a further significant occurrence in C-90; the increase in minimum compressive strength of units.

This presentation will explain these changes in detail, and will feature a case study showing significant cost savings as a result of a higher specified strength masonry assembly. The program will also chronicle the evolution of the CMU manufacturing process, and will compare and contrast early production methods with modern technology used today. In addition, the presentation will illustrate several informative examples of concrete masonry products’ unique ability to provide both aesthetic form as well as moisture resistant structural function, which will help attendees to become further skilled at designing and constructing more efficient and cost effective load bearing masonry structures.

Learning objectives for the session:

  • Participants will gain knowledge of the concrete masonry manufacturing process. They will learn some of the history of block production, and will also learn how advances in technology contribute towards consistent, high quality, modern concrete masonry units. Participants will also learn of the wide variety of concrete masonry products that can be manufactured with the current technology.
  • Participants will understand how efficient, cost-competitive structures can be designed with modern concrete masonry units.
  • Participants will gain an increased awareness of concrete masonry’s inherent resistance to mold.
  • Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the fundamentals of moisture resistant concrete masonry construction. Attendees will also come away with an increased awareness of the significance of the proper design and placement of flashing materials and weeps.

***This presentation is registered with AIACES for 1 HSW credit.***

Nicholas F. Carparelli is the Executive Director of the NYS Concrete Masonry Association. Since his appointment to this position in 2003, Nick has been responsible for facilitating the development and implementation of programs intended to assist design professionals with the use of concrete masonry in various construction applications throughout New York State. He is also Co-Director of the NYS Structural Masonry Coalition, an alliance of masonry organizations working together to encourage the use of structural masonry. Nick has also served on the ACI CNY Board of Directors, and continues to serve the Chapter in an advisory capacity. Nick has coordinated the annual ACI CNY Awards for Design and Installation of Masonry since 2004.

Prior to assuming the directorship at the NYSCMA, Nick served as Director of Paving Services for Central NY for the American Concrete Pavement Association, Northeast Chapter. Nick has been involved in the construction and building products industry for his entire career, beginning with his family’s block, ready-mix and building supply business in 1971. Over several years with the family business, Nick gained first-hand experience in the manufacturing of concrete masonry units and the production of ready-mix concrete, as well as an overall knowledge of several other cement-related building materials. Nick is a life-long resident of the Mohawk Valley, and has been married to his wife Carol for 38 years.
