President's Message

Hello All,

It sure pays to be the home chapter of a legend in the industry, Dr. Ken Hover, as we had a great crowd and a great talk by Dr. Hover at our September meeting. I must admit I was curious going into the meeting on his thoughts of NRMCA’s “P2P” program; I was then totally impressed to learn that Dr. Hover was an author of the document!

Well for this month, we are continuing our recent trend of having a field trip before it snows. I hope that you can attend the Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) live demonstration that Riccelli/Northern has agreed to host, sponsor, and perform at their new ready mix plant on Northern Blvd. The demo is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15th, with a  FREE dinner catered by Dinosaur BBQ!

There is renewed interest in this technology as the speed of paving, its high strength, and incredible durability make for an attractive pavement alternative. We will have the opportunity to observe RCC that was placed in September, watch the material being paved, and earn 1 PDH when yours truly gives you a brief presentation on the design and applications of RCC. More details and registration info are available on the ACI CNY website. Hard hats and safety glasses will be available, but we encourage you to bring your own.

The seminar will consist of viewing roller compacted concrete (RCC) in place, constructed pavements, a live demonstration of it being placed, and a brief power point presentation and discussion after dinner. During the presentation, Mr. Novitzki will discuss the many benefits that RCC pavement provides, proper mix design requirements and specifications, and the structural design of the pavement. He will also discuss proper construction practices and NRMCA’s Design Assistance Program. Attendees will better understand the resources available and the proper procedures for design and construction of RCC pavements.

Greg Novitzki is a NYS registered Professional Engineer who joined NY Materials in the fall of 2006. He has a diverse construction materials engineering and construction background. Previously, he managed the Syracuse office for Atlantic Testing Laboratories (ATL) for seven years. ATL is a construction materials testing and engineering firm.
